What is it with newsreaders pronouncing words such as Olympics or illegal as if they started with the letter “a”?

The last time I checked, the great contest that rolls around every four summers and again every fourth winter, begins with with a short “o”, not a short “a”.

Similarly, there is no such word as allegal, so this should stop … ammediately.
